Cojoba costaricensis

From the Fabaceae family

Endemic to Costa Rica, Cojoba costaricensis is a species of leguminous tree found in cloud forests at higher elevations. Its populations are highly fragmented due to deforestation.

It can grow up to 20 meters tall, with a slender trunk and a broad crown of pinnate leaves. The bark is light brown and smooth, and the tree produces small, fragrant white flowers in clusters. These are followed by long, flat pods.

Classified as Critically Endangered (CR), this species is threatened by habitat loss and is now subject to protection efforts to preserve the biodiversity of Costa Rica’s cloud forests.

The Terminalia oblonga, also called Yellow Almond is a key species in the tropical forests of Costa Rica, particularly important as a food source for the endangered Great Green Macaw.

This tree can grow up to 40 meters tall, with a broad, spreading crown and a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 meters. Its bark is rough and grayish, and it produces long, almond-shaped fruits that attract a variety of wildlife.

Listed as Critically Endangered (CR), the Yellow almond is under severe pressure from deforestation, primarily due to agricultural expansion. Conservation efforts focus on protecting its habitat and ensuring the survival of species that depend on it.

Zamia pseudomonticola

Zamia pseudomonticola is a cycad species endemic to Costa Rica’s tropical lowland forests. With its ancient lineage, it represents one of the oldest groups of seed-bearing plants.

This small tree-like plant can grow up to 3 meters tall, with a crown of dark green, feather-like leaves. Its thick, short trunk is covered in leaf scars, and it produces cone-like reproductive structures.

It is Critically Endangered (CR) due to habitat destruction and illegal collection. Efforts are underway to protect its remaining populations and raise awareness of its ecological importance.
